Alumni Interview: NHS Scientist Training Programme - Pharmaceutical Sciences

Posted in: Alumni Case Study - Science

This blog is written by Justin, one of our Bath Life Science MSc Drug Discovery alumni, currently on the NHS Scientist Training Programme. If you would like to find out more about this graduate programme, please visit the NHS STP website. Additionally, check out our resources on MyFuture to help with your application.

Tell me a little about yourself and your studies.

During my undergraduate chemistry degree, I came across a topic about phage display. I started to appreciate how scientists can use proteins and cells to help cure diseases. This ignited my interest in biochemistry, so I decided to complete the MSc Drug Discovery programme at Bath. It suited my interests well, and the course included a mini research project, allowing me to gain valuable research experience. This project strengthened my determination to pursue a lab-based career, and the STP seemed like a perfect fit.

Describe your journey since graduating.

After graduation, I stayed in Bath and continued searching for jobs. It didn’t go well initially, as I faced multiple rejections. To support myself, I took a part-time job in catering while continuing to apply for suitable roles, including the STP and other science and lab-based positions.

What did you do to prepare for the STP application?

I prepared extensively! I found useful resources on MyFuture, such as SJT and aptitude practice tests, and I strongly suggest everyone utilises them. I also met with a careers consultant who provided invaluable tips on writing personal statements, interview preparation, and general career advice.

In May, I received an interview invite. This year, they changed the format slightly, and it was a competitive interview with a competition ratio of 2:1. It consisted of technical questions, as well as questions on behaviours, values, and leadership.

To prepare, I:

  • Revised my chemistry notes and specialism knowledge for technical questions.
  • Reviewed the course content of the MSc Pharmaceutical Science, which I would be completing on the STP, using university pages and YouTube lectures.
  • Read the NHS constitution and STP personal specification to prepare for values and behaviours questions.
  • Considered which of my work experiences, hobbies, and extracurricular activities demonstrated these values.
  • Utilised AI, using prompts like “Provide me with 20 questions related to pharmaceutical science” or “Give me 10 qualities of a good leader.” However, I didn’t rely solely on these answers but used them to test my own responses.
  • Thought about the structure of my answers to avoid rushing when nervous.

The interviewers were very friendly and gave me prompts when I was stuck on a question. The STP is a training programme where you learn a lot of new knowledge, so they don’t expect you to know everything.

What advice would you give to students and graduates thinking about applying to the STP?

Seek advice from your career consultant and utilise the online resources—they are really helpful. Also, spend time understanding whether the role is suitable for you, and do not underestimate the importance of NHS values when writing your personal statement and during interview responses.
