Deadly Industry: Challenging Big Tobacco - interview with podcast guest, Jorge Alday

Posted in: Industry tactics, Podcast, Research

This blog is part of our series of conversations on all things podcast to celebrate the launch of Deadly Industry: Challenging Big Tobacco. This time we are speaking with Jorge Alday, Director of STOP, a global tobacco industry watchdog.

Jorge is a guest on episode 6 of Deadly Industry: Challenging Big Tobacco where he speaks about tobacco industry marketing.

(Opinions expressed in this blog are those of the author, not of the Tobacco Control Research Group or the University of Bath)

Why did you want to get involved in the project?

The Tobacco Control Research Group publishes incredibly valuable research and the podcast feels like a great extension of that work. If participating can help deliver industry insights to more people, then I’m all in.

What was your experience of working on the podcast like?

My experience was very smooth. It was especially helpful that the podcast team provided questions beforehand because that helped me prepare. Louis was an excellent host who helped make the conversation feel fluid and natural.

What do you think of podcasts as a medium to disseminate research on this topic?

I think it’s a really good idea and worth testing. We need more ways to make research accessible and relatable. I’d be interested to know how popular podcasts are outside of the U.S. and Western Europe.

What podcasts do you like to listen to? Do you listen to podcasts at particular times?

I listen to fewer podcasts now that I don’t commute as frequently. When I did listen, I subscribed to some political punditry podcasts like Pod Save America, news programs like Meet The Press or mysteries like Serial.

In one sentence, why do you think people should listen to your episode of Deadly Industry: Challenging Big Tobacco?

For the overall podcast, I’d say: Big corporations, especially tobacco, alcohol, food and fossil fuels, are making our health worse and we need to learn more about how they are doing it.

For my episode – you might not know it, but tobacco companies are marketing to you and your kids!

Are there any episodes you are particularly looking forward to hearing/anything you think we should cover in future episodes?

I look forward to some of the episodes outside of tobacco.
